ABQ Zawya, Proleads in out-of-court deal

ABQ Zawya has received an undisclosed amount in out-of-court settlement for copyright breaches committed by Proleads.

Proleads yesterday placed a notice of apology on its website addressed to ABQ Zawya, which operates Zawya Projects, admitting that a number of Proleads employees and contractors have copied material from the Zawya Projects website, which was then published on Proleads’ website, for almost five months between February and June 2009.

// According to the apology notice, which was also circulated in e-mail notifications to clients, the breaches took place in 472 incidents. The settlement included legal costs and compensation for loss of business, according to Husain Makiya, Director of Opportunity Division, Zawya.

The access to the copied information took place when an ex-employee of Zawya approached Proleads and gave his Zawya username and password to a Proleads sales executive who then passed it on until it reached the research team.

Emil Rademeyer, Director of Proleads, said: “We have deleted all the copied information from our servers and have taken disciplinary action. We have also implemented new procedures for research and data.”

DIC growth in 2009 defies global slump

Dubai: Dubai Internet City (DIC), the region’s premier ICT cluster and a member of Tecom Investments, on Sunday announced 2009 proved to be a successful year with the addition of 135 new companies.

It said several companies expanded business partnerships in the cluster amid a flurry of industry-related milestones including mergers and acquisitions affirming the region’s strong fundamentals.

Communications leader Nokia Siemens Networks also expanded its existing facilities, as did Qualcomm, McAfee and Research in Motion, maker of the BlackBerry.

Malek Al Malek, Executive Director, Dubai Internet City, said: “The trying times during the year following the onslaught of the global economic crisis brought unpredictable consequences to companies globally and regionally. Other ICT players that joined DIC last year include leading companies such as India-based Tata Communications, Norway headquartered Telenor Global Services, KDDI Singapore and Sophos Middle East.

Cementing its position as a driver of the region’s ICT industry and as a destination that aids companies to grow and develop, DIC also witnessed key acquisitions within the industry.

In one of the biggest deals of its kind, Yahoo! acquired DIC-based Maktoob, providing further incentive to IT startups in the region.

Another business partner Tandberg, one of the largest makers of video conferencing systems, was acquired by Cisco recently. Cisco also expanded its already significant presence at DIC to accommodate its regional growth.

DIC has also been successful in attracting SMEs through its FirstSteps@DIC Business Center, a unique facility that allows new companies to test the region.

US technology and IT firms to expand their presence in the Dubai Silicon Oasis

Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO), the region’s premier integrated innovations hub for high-technology industries, yesterday announced a high-level official delegation held discussions with a number of US-based technology and IT companies seeking to set up presence in the Middle East.

McAfee asks companies to rethink security for removable media devices

IT security technology company McAfee has advised companies to rethink their approach to removable media devices.

By providing a framework for companies to approach removable media strategies, McAfee aims to provide its customers with “freedom through security”.

“Enterprises are looking for ways to solve the evolving and critical problem of data loss via removable media storage devices,” said Brian Burke, Program Director, Security Product Services at IDC

“Employee-sourced storage devices, employer-provided USB sticks, and the management and enforcement of corporate device policy all need to be addressed in a cost-effective manner that doesn’t sacrifice security. A complete removable media solution requires behaviour and content-aware controls, fully-secure managed devices for users with integrated anti-malware, and portable software encryption.”

Companies, employees and their data are more mobile than ever before, and the number of removable media devices is skyrocketing.
